Here is a paragraph: “In speaking thus the sentiments of my neighbors and my own, perhaps I overstep the bounds of decorum. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote a powerful letter to President Van Buren against the removal of the tribes. Thankfully, there were some Caucasians that pleaded with the government on the Natives’ behalf, knowing these were unpopular sentiments amongst many xenophobes who performed unspeakable acts in the name of expansion, gold, racism and bigotry. An estimated 4,000 Cherokee died as a result of the forced relocation. The government had taken their land, the land of their ancestors, the land of their childhood memories, the land that they loved in exchange for unfamiliar land in Oklahoma. But, I would imagine their faces were wet long after they arrived. My drive from Van Buren, Arkansas to Lake Thunderbird State Park in Norman, Oklahoma took me through the heart of “Indian Territory.” The Trail of Tears ended here.
